Assessing the *Ayu Bhava* (the house of longevity) is one of the most complex and sensitive subjects in Vedic astrology. According to Vedic astrology, a human lifespan is primarily divided into three major categories, known as "*Ayu Khanda*" (segments of lifespan).
The category into which an individual falls is determined primarily by the positions of the 8th house (the house of longevity), the 3rd house (the "8th from the 8th"), and the *Lagnesh* (Lord of the Ascendant) in the birth chart.
According to the sages, the main categories of lifespan and their governing rules are as follows:
1. *Alpayu* (Short Lifespan)
Timeframe: From birth up to the age of 32.
Astrological Reasons: When the lords of both the 1st house (representing the physical body) and the 8th house (representing longevity)—i.e., the *Lagnesh* and the *Lord of the 8th House*—are very weak, afflicted by malefic planets (Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu), or situated in the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses.
Indications: There is a likelihood of serious health issues or accidents during the early stages of life. This category encompasses *Balarishta* (afflictions in childhood) and *Yogarishta* (afflictions in youth).
2. *Madhyayu* (Medium Lifespan)
Timeframe: From the age of 32 to 70.
Astrological Reasons: When the conditions in the horoscope are mixed. For instance, if the *Lagnesh* is strong but the *Lord of the 8th House* is weak, or vice versa; or when the influences of benefic and malefic planets are balanced.
Indications: The individual leads a normal, average life. Major health-related issues may arise in the later stages of life (around the age of 50 or 60).
3. *Dirghayu* (Long Lifespan) Longevity
Timeframe: From age 70 to 100 (or beyond). Astrological factors:
The Lord of the Ascendant (Lagnesh) and the Lord of the Eighth House (Ashtamesh) are both strongly placed in Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or Trikona (5, 9) houses—either exalted or in their own signs.
Saturn (Shani Dev), the significator of longevity (*Ayu-karaka*), is strong and under auspicious influence in the horoscope.
Jupiter (Devaguru Brihaspati) casts a beneficial, life-sustaining aspect (*Drishti*) upon the eighth house.
Indication: Such a person leads a healthy, happy, and full life, maintaining their vitality even in old age.
